I get an all expenses paid trip to Chicago in August, 2007, for the Church Wide Assembly. WooHoo!

Since this is an all expense paid trip, I think you should make them pay. Make sure you go out for lobster with your entire family, for breakfast, lunch, and supper. Tell anyone who questions this decision that you were practicing "active listening" and talking to the illegal immigrant chefs, and feeling their pain as you ate the food knowing that only by eating their cuisine could you assure them a fair "working" wage.
On a serious note, you are in my prayers. Last assembly was no victory for orthodox Christianity. This next one might be one that finally leads the national office to be completely irrelevant to the lives of congregations, and if they don't leave the ELCA outright, they will be ELCA in name only (I must confess that this is where I and my parish are).
It is a mystery to me...I filled out my bio very honestly. Homeschool enrichment program board of directors, 2nd vp of republican women's group - rather strong conservative credentials! I also included my past professional church work and volunteering at CWA last year - Pastor R. H. said that helped. I won by a rather significant margin in the run-off and that surprised me with my being so obviously traditionalist.
